Rock Climbing in Krabi
|

 |
The incredible limestone
cliffs of Tonsai bay and Railey (Krabi province), provide some of
the world’s most spectacular sports climbing. Stretching from China
down to Papua New Guinea they make up part of the worlds largest
coral reef.
The routes are all bolted sport climbing routes with the French
grading system being used. With over 700 routes ranging from
beginner 5a's to classic multipitch 6a's right up to the extremes of
8c there's enough here to keep any climber busy for years.
There are a multitude of rock climbing schools on both Tonsai and
Railay to choose from plus Ao Nang's very own Ao Nang Climbers. Rock climbing courses range from 1-3 days
with private instructors available for the more advanced
crag-hanger.Krabi province
also hosted the 2010 Krabi Rock and Fire International Contest
during April 16 – 18. The competition featured three contest
categories consisting of the Lead Climbing Marathon, Speed Climbing
and Deep Water Soloing with the addition of the fire show contest.

Deep Water Soloing
Krabi
Deep water soloing (DWS)
fever hit Krabi in late 2009 with Wee's Rock Climbing School being
the major player. Wee arranges trips from Tonsai Beach, and the excessively strong are now coming to pull hard
on pristine rock over tropical waters.
In many ways deep
water soloing is the next great frontier. All you need is a pair of
shoes, an absence of fear and start clmbing straight from your
kayak. As word continues to spread, Railey and Tonsai
will no doubt become the centre of a deep water soloing Mecca.
To sign up for a trip, get yourself over to Wee's shop on Tonsai
beach. Go there the night before you wish to go, and place your name
down on the list for the next day. Wee organises the timing of the
trip to coincide with the best tides, so times change a little every
day.

Kayaking Ao Nang,
Krabi
There are a number
of kayaking operators offering different packages in Krabi. The most
basic option is to rent a sea kayak by the hour from Ao Nang beach,
which allows you to explore the coast near where you are staying, or
simply get to the next, deserted beach along the shore. Or, you can
go on an organised full-day trip into more remote areas.
The most popular day trips in Krabi being kayaking at Koh Hong and Ao
Thalane. Koh Hong features the beautiful white sand of Pelay beach
and shallow waters that allow you
to explore around caves accessible only through narrow tunnels.
Keeping you company are the sea eagles soaring above and starfish
just below the surface.
Ao Thalane is a small fishing village, located in the heart of Krabi’s local
mangrove ecosystem. By paddling through the
intricate waterways by kayak, you can penetrate the diverse swamps and
limestone karsts, highlighted by a lagoon and canyon.
